Muqaddam and Khalife General: Two Named Variants

Not every order uses the word khalifa for this office, and two West African-rooted orders show how the same institution gets built differently under a different name. The Tijaniyyah, founded by Ahmad al-Tijani in Fez in the late eighteenth century, calls its deputized teachers muqaddams rather than khalifas. A muqaddam is authorized to induct new members into the order's distinctive wird, the fixed daily litany the founder claimed was given to him directly by the Prophet in a waking vision, and the Tijaniyya's rule that a member may belong to no other order at the same time made its muqaddam network unusually centralized and exclusive as the order spread from Morocco and Algeria across West Africa. Jamil Abun-Nasr's study of the order traces how a comparatively small number of muqaddams, personally trained and dispatched, built the Tijaniyya into one of the most widespread Sufi orders in West Africa within a few generations.

The Muridiyya, founded in Senegal by Ahmadu Bamba, took the underlying structure further and made it the entire government of the order. On Bamba's death in 1927 the order did not fragment among many independent khalifas; it consolidated behind a single Khalife General, chosen by seniority among Bamba's sons and later grandsons, holding supreme religious and organizational authority over the whole Muridiyya. Cheikh Anta Babou and Donal Cruise O'Brien's histories of the order both treat the Khalife General succession, exercised in unbroken sequence since Bamba's death, as the institutional backbone that let the Muridiyya become one of the most cohesive religious organizations in West Africa.
