Knight Of The Rose Croix, The Chapter's Culminating Degree

Knight of the Rose Croix is the eighteenth degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the culminating degree of the Rite's Chapter of Rose Croix and one of its most widely discussed. It follows the fourteen degrees of the Lodge of Perfection and precedes the Council of Kadosh degrees, standing at the midpoint of the Rite's twenty nine numbered degree sequence.

The degree's symbolism draws on rose and cross imagery shared with the Rosicrucian tradition, though the Scottish Rite and historical Rosicrucianism, the loosely organized seventeenth century movement built around the Fama Fraternitatis and its companion manifestos, are separate organizations with no institutional continuity between them. The borrowing is thematic rather than genealogical: the Rite adopted imagery already associated with Christian mystical symbolism of renewal and rebirth, imagery Rosicrucianism itself had also drawn on, rather than descending from any Rosicrucian body.

Because it closes the Chapter of Rose Croix and sits roughly midway through the full twenty nine degree sequence, Knight of the Rose Croix is frequently discussed in general Masonic scholarship as a hinge degree, the point at which the Rite's imagery shifts from the more overtly Craft-adjacent themes of the Lodge of Perfection toward the chivalric and philosophical material that dominates the Council of Kadosh and the Consistory beyond it.
