Lady Xoc and the Bloodletting Rite of 709 CE

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Yaxchilan Lintel 24, now held by the British Museum, shows Lady Xoc kneeling before her husband Shield Jaguar while pulling a rope studded with obsidian or flint blades through her tongue, drawing blood that falls onto paper held in a basket at her knees, while Shield Jaguar stands over her holding a large torch. The accompanying hieroglyphic text records the date as 28 October 709 CE. Simon Martin and Nikolai Grube's dynastic history of the Maya identifies this as part of a set of paired lintels, 24, 25 and 26, originally mounted together in the doorways of Structure 23, a temple that inscriptions credit to Lady Xoc's own patronage. On Lintel 25, the companion scene to the bloodletting, Lady Xoc kneels before a bowl containing the blood soaked paper, now set alight, from which a great serpent rises with an ancestral figure, sometimes identified with a warrior ancestor, emerging from its open jaws. Michael Coe and Stephen Houston's survey of Maya civilization discusses this pairing as one of the clearest surviving depictions of the vision rite, in which royal bloodletting is understood to open a channel through which an ancestor or supernatural being becomes visible to the ruling family. The precise ritual role played by blood drawn from the tongue, as distinct from other bloodletting sites recorded elsewhere in Maya art, remains a subject of ongoing scholarly discussion.
