The Path That Already Knew Its Rival
The lamrim's insistence on sequence has a specific historical opponent, not just a philosophical one. Tibetan tradition dates the argument to a debate held at Samye monastery in the late eighth century between the Indian scholar Kamalashila, representing a graduated path through analysis and accumulated merit, and the Chinese Chan teacher known in Tibetan sources as Hashang Moheyan, who taught that thought itself was the obstacle and that non-conceptual insight required no sequence of preparatory steps at all. Tibetan royal and monastic histories record the king ruling in Kamalashila's favor, and Kamalashila is said to have written a set of Stages of Meditation treatises setting out the gradualist case in the debate's aftermath. Modern scholarship treats the reported outcome with real caution, since every surviving account of who won was written by the winning side, but the debate's memory did the cultural work regardless of what actually happened in the room: it gave later Tibetan scholasticism, and Tsongkhapa after it, a founding story in which the graduated path had already met its sudden rival directly and could name exactly what it was arguing against. Manuscripts recovered from the Dunhuang caves complicate the neat resolution the Tibetan sources report: a Chinese-language account among that material claims Moheyan's own position won imperial approval, the reverse of what later Tibetan historiography preserved. Twentieth century scholarship built around those manuscripts, most influentially Paul Demieville's study of the episode, treats the contradiction itself as evidence the debate's outcome was contested from close to the start rather than only debated by modern historians centuries afterward.
