A Birth Year Becomes Contested Ground in a State Campaign

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Li Hongzhi has stated his own birth year as 1951, but the Chinese government's household registration records, made public as part of its campaign against Falun Gong, place his birth in 1952 instead, and Chinese state media argued at the time that Li had altered his official date to align with the traditional birthday of the Buddha, part of a wider effort to frame him as a fraud. Falun Gong has disputed both the altered record and the reading placed on it, treating the discrepancy as one more product of a state campaign built to discredit the movement's founder rather than a genuine biographical fact.

The dispute sits inside a larger confrontation: after Li relocated to the United States shortly before China's 1999 ban, Falun Gong became a target of sustained state suppression, and the movement's international activities since have included human rights advocacy documenting that campaign's treatment of practitioners who remained in China. Li has continued to lead the movement from abroad, publishing further lectures and overseeing its global organization, while the question of even his own birth date remains contested territory in the propaganda exchange between the movement and the government that banned it.

A detail as small as a birth year, in Li Hongzhi's case, became genuinely contested ground precisely because the state that published the counter record was simultaneously running the broader campaign to discredit the movement he founded.
