Martial Art or Devotional Dance

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Chhau resists a clean classification, and even its name will not settle the question. One proposed derivation traces it to the Sanskrit chhaya, meaning shadow or mask, which would root the tradition in disguise and character transformation; a rival derivation traces it instead to chadma, meaning deception or feint, a term more at home on a battlefield than on a devotional stage. Neither derivation commands full scholarly agreement, and the disagreement mirrors a larger one about what kind of tradition Chhau actually is.

The dance's own vocabulary makes the case for both readings at once. Its footwork and combat sequences draw directly on regional martial practice, giving performances a genuinely athletic, sometimes acrobatic character closer to armed sparring than to classical dance discipline, while its subject matter, staged under the frameworks of Shaivism, Shaktism and Vaishnavism as the story demands, is unmistakably devotional in intent. The most widely accepted scholarly position treats Chhau as a genuine fusion rather than a martial art wearing religious costume or a devotional dance borrowing warlike gestures for spectacle, a synthesis of older regional martial and tribal performance traditions with classical Hindu dance and narrative material, absorbed into the Chaitra Parva spring festival calendar where the tradition's connection to seasonal and agricultural renewal remains most visible today.
