The Volckman Challenge and a Later Verdict on Crookes

Crookes's positive report did not settle the question, and the case against it rests on two separate lines of challenge. First, at a December 1873 séance, before Crookes's formal investigation began, sitter William Volckman, suspicious of the resemblance between Katie King and the medium, seized the materialized figure by the wrist and waist and found her build indistinguishable from Cook's own, a direct physical challenge that Cook's supporters attributed to Volckman's rough handling disrupting a genuine phenomenon and critics took as decisive evidence the "spirit" was Cook herself in costume.

Second, Crookes's own rigor has been questioned by later historians: a critical report published by the Society for Psychical Research in 1964 and subsequent historical analysis raised the possibility that Crookes's personal closeness to the young Cook compromised his scientific detachment and the tightness of his controls, a criticism that has followed Crookes's Cook investigation, though not his separate work with D. D. Home, ever since. No materialization claim from this or any later period has been produced under conditions that combined full physical restraint of the medium, full search of the séance room and cabinet, and independent identification of the materialized figure sufficient to rule out impersonation, and materialization remains, alongside ectoplasm from which it was often said to be built, one of the physical mediumship claims most directly undermined by close investigation.
