A Battle Before a Vision

Long before Christian tradition placed the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, the same hill was already the site of a decisive battle described in the Hebrew Bible.

A battle before a vision

The Book of Judges describes Deborah and Barak assembling Israelite forces on Mount Tabor before defeating the Canaanite commander Sisera, a military narrative that gave the mountain religious and historical significance well over a thousand years before Christian tradition identified it as the site of Jesus's Transfiguration, layering two entirely separate traditions onto the same physical hill.

Two churches, one summit

The summit today holds both a Roman Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, administered by Franciscans, and a separate Greek Orthodox church, each maintaining its own building and observances on the same mountain under an arrangement of parallel rather than shared use, a pattern echoing the divided custodial arrangements found at several other contested Christian sites covered in this atlas.

As this entry's companion article covers

The specific gospel narrative of the Transfiguration itself, and how Mount Tabor's rounded, isolated shape came to be identified with that event, are addressed directly in this entry's companion article rather than repeated here.
