An Order Built to Defend Cities Under Unjust Attack

Mohism was not only a philosophy but an organized movement with its own chain of command, a structure unusual among the philosophical schools of Warring States China. Mozi's followers formed a disciplined order under a chief called the juzi, a title passed from leader to leader after Mozi's own death, and the order is recorded as being willing to send trained members to help defend a city under unjust attack, consistent with the school's explicit condemnation of offensive warfare between states as wasteful cruelty inflicted mainly on ordinary people who had no say in starting it. That practical commitment grew directly from Mozi's central ethical claim, jian ai, impartial or universal care: people should regard the states, families, and persons of others exactly as they regard their own, a standard he argued follows from the impartial will of Heaven, which rewards righteousness without regard to rank or birth and punishes its absence the same way.

Mozi turned that same logic of impartial benefit into a sweeping critique of elite Confucian ritual, arguing that elaborate funerals, extended mourning periods, and lavish court music consumed resources and labor that could otherwise support ordinary people's basic needs, and he argued for selecting officials by demonstrated ability rather than hereditary privilege, a meritocratic principle that put him at odds with the family centered hierarchy Confucian teaching assumed.

His later followers, working through what survive as the Mohist Canons, pushed some of these arguments into early and remarkably rigorous work on logic, definition, and the nature of evidence, among the most technically sophisticated philosophical writing produced anywhere in the ancient world.
