How the Naqshbandi Order Teaches It
Muraqabah is taught with markedly more procedural detail in some Sufi orders than in others, and the Naqshbandi lineage's method is the most systematised example available for showing what the practice looks like as an actual taught technique rather than a general description of watchful attention. Naqshbandi teaching maps a set of subtle centres, the lataif, onto specific points on the chest and body, each associated with a particular spiritual quality and a particular coloured light in visualisation, and a student progresses under a guide's direction by holding attention successively at each point while silently repeating the name of God, a structured sequence quite unlike the simple undirected sitting some other orders teach as the whole of muraqabah. This systematisation reflects the order's wider emphasis on a living teacher's close, individualised direction of a student's inner state, captured in the Naqshbandi principle of khalwat dar anjuman, solitude within society, the idea that the contemplative awareness cultivated in muraqabah should ultimately be sustained while outwardly engaged in ordinary worldly activity rather than only in seclusion, distinguishing the order's aim from withdrawal-focused contemplative practice elsewhere.
Other orders teach muraqabah with far less structural elaboration, some reducing it to sitting quietly in the state that follows dhikr with no described sequence of points or lights at all, which means a Muslim asking what muraqabah involves will receive substantially different answers depending on which order's teacher they ask, a variation the tradition treats as normal given that method has always been considered secondary to the transmission relationship between teacher and student.
