What Is Actually Known About the Man Behind the Name
Narmer is known to modern scholarship almost entirely through inscribed objects rather than any surviving narrative account, and it is the number and variety of those objects, not the fame of any single one, that persuades Egyptologists his reign was real rather than a later invention. Beyond the ceremonial palette that carries his name in a serekh above a scene of conquest, his name recurs on pottery vessels, seal impressions and other small inscribed objects recovered from sites across Egypt and, notably, in southern Canaan, a spread the Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt reads as evidence of early Egyptian trade contact and political reach beyond the Nile valley rather than of the Palette's own symbolism alone. Barry Kemp's study of early Egyptian state formation treats this redundancy of attestation, the same name appearing independently on different classes of object, made by different hands, for different purposes, as exactly the kind of evidence that separates a securely attested Predynastic ruler from the many other names of the period known from only one or two finds. His own name is written with the hieroglyphs for a catfish and a chisel, conventionally read nar-mer, though Egyptologists remain divided on the precise sense the pairing was meant to carry, since the writing system of this period offers few certain grammatical cues to settle a reading. What the objects do not supply is any narrative. No surviving text from his own reign describes its events in his own words, so everything beyond his name, his approximate dates around 3100 BCE and the symbols of kingship he is shown wearing rests on inference from durable objects rather than on any account his own court left behind.
