410 Billion Baht, Revealed by an Investigation

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The National Office of Buddhism does not routinely publish a consolidated total of Thai temple wealth. The one aggregate figure on the public record, that Thai Buddhist temples nationwide held approximately 410 billion baht in savings across some 39,000 bank accounts as of the first quarter of 2025, did not come from the Office's own regular reporting. It emerged through a joint disclosure with the Bank of Thailand, reported 13 July 2025, made public amid a probe into embezzlement by senior monks.

That origin matters for how the figure should be read. It is an aggregate for temples nationwide, not the National Office of Buddhism's own operating budget, and it reached the public because an investigation prompted a one-off joint disclosure, not because Thailand's temple finances are routinely reported in this form.

The pattern echoes a wider one in Thai Buddhist institutional finance: some of the clearest public figures for temple wealth have surfaced through investigations rather than voluntary disclosure, a pattern also visible in the record of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, Thailand's largest single temple, whose own finances reached the public record the same way.
