A Spirit Medium Directs an Armed Uprising in the First Chimurenga

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Nehanda Nyakasikana was a woman of Mashonaland, in what is now Zimbabwe, recognized within Shona tradition as a medium possessed by Nehanda, an ancestral mhondoro spirit whose mediums held a long standing role in the region's political and religious life, a documented religious office distinct from a purely secular claim to political leadership carrying no ritual standing behind it. That role placed her within a system of spirit mediumship already established in Shona religious life well before the events for which she is chiefly remembered, a documented continuity distinct from an office invented for the occasion of the conflict itself.

In that capacity she was among the most prominent figures inciting and directing the First Chimurenga, the 1896 to 1897 uprising against the rule of the British South Africa Company in Mashonaland, a documented political and military role distinct from a spiritual office kept apart from armed resistance against colonial rule. Colonial forces captured her in late 1897, a documented military defeat distinct from a resistance that continued unbroken through to independence.

That a woman recognized as the medium of an ancestral mhondoro spirit became, in that same religious capacity, one of the most prominent figures directing an armed uprising against colonial rule, marks Nehanda Nyakasikana's role in the First Chimurenga as a documented case where an established religious office and a leading part in organized political resistance were held by the same person at once.
