Sama, Service and a Shrine That Still Draws Crowds

Two commitments defined Nizamuddin Auliya's teaching more than any other. The first was an insistence that love of God had to be expressed concretely through service to other human beings, a principle Chishti sources record him repeating in various forms throughout his life and treating as inseparable from any claim to genuine spirituality, so that feeding the hungry and comforting the grieving were not charitable supplements to his teaching but central to it. The second was his defense of sama, spiritually focused musical performance, as a legitimate and valuable path toward divine ecstasy, a position considerably more permissive than that held by many contemporary jurists, who regarded music as religiously suspect at best, and Nizamuddin's standing was significant enough that his defense of the practice helped secure sama a lasting, institutionally protected place within Chishti devotional life rather than remaining a marginal or contested practice. That protected place is precisely what allowed qawwali, developed within his circle and associated closely with his disciple Amir Khusrau, to flourish as the order's signature devotional art form.

Nizamuddin's tomb in Delhi's Nizamuddin Dargah complex remains one of the most visited Sufi shrines in South Asia, drawing worshippers across religious lines and hosting qawwali performances, most famously each Thursday evening, that continue a musical practice its own namesake fought to protect more than seven centuries ago, and Amir Khusrau's tomb stands immediately beside his, the two men's devotion to each other still legible in the shrine's own layout.
