Where Two Palaces Meet at the Center of the Face

The nose, read as the third of the five officers, the Examiner Officer, shen bian guan, or the officer of discernment, sits at the literal center of the face and functions as a kind of summary reading in the system's own terms, since it gathers together two of the twelve palaces that occupy different parts of the same feature. The Wealth Palace, at the nose's tip and wings, and the Health Palace, at its bridge, both sit entirely within the territory the Examiner Officer claims for its own broader reading of self and material stability, so a practitioner assessing the nose as an officer is implicitly synthesizing what the two palace level readings already say about money and constitution into one combined judgment about the whole self the nose is held to represent.

A straight, well proportioned nose with a full tip and well formed wings is read as a sign of good judgment, self possession and material stability under this combined reading, while a crooked, bony or overly sharp nose is read as a caution about instability in the self or in finances. That the system's most central facial feature carries this much interpretive weight, one officer reading layered directly over two separate palace readings at the same location, reflects the tradition's own broader logic that the nose, sitting literally in the middle of the face, is where the whole person is most legible.
