What Counts as Work

The Jewish Sabbath is defined not by resting from effort but by abstaining from thirty-nine named categories of creative work, derived by the rabbis from the activities involved in building the desert sanctuary.

The list includes sowing, ploughing, reaping, threshing, kneading, baking, weaving, sewing, writing, building, kindling and extinguishing fire, and carrying between domains. The consequences are not intuitive from the English word rest. Carrying a house key in the street is prohibited unless an eruv, a symbolic boundary enclosing an area, has been established; switching on a light falls under kindling; a strenuous walk is permitted while writing a shopping list is not. Modern application requires continual reasoning about new technology, and the rabbinic literature on electricity, refrigeration, lifts, hearing aids and now sensors and phones is large and genuinely disputed within itself.

The result is a day with a distinct texture rather than an empty one. It begins with candles lit before sunset, includes three meals, wine and bread, synagogue attendance, and long stretches of eating and conversation, and ends with a short ceremony over wine, spice and a plaited candle. Preparation absorbs much of Friday. The discontinuity is the point: the world of production is switched off deliberately and completely for twenty-five hours, and the switching off is what is being observed.

The principle of preserving life overrides all of it without exception. A doctor drives to a patient, a fire is put out, a telephone is used, and Jewish law treats failing to do so not as extra piety but as a sin.
