Mermaid Folklore Read Upright and Reversed

Oracle of the Mermaids is a forty five card deck Lucy Cavendish created with artwork by Selina Fenech, published by Blue Angel Publishing in 2013. Its cards carry messages of healing, love and romance framed as coming from mermaid figures, part of Cavendish's wider range of oracle decks illustrated by fantasy artists and built around a recurring cast of mythic feminine figures, a pattern that also produced Wild Wisdom of the Faery Oracle with the same illustrator three years earlier.

Like Cavendish's other decks, Oracle of the Mermaids is unusual among oracle decks in using reversed as well as upright meanings, a structural choice that sets her catalogue apart from the upright only convention used by creators such as Kyle Gray and Doreen Virtue across their own decks. Mermaid folklore appears across many coastal cultures in varying forms, from Greek sirens to selkies in Scottish and Irish tradition, and Cavendish's deck draws on that broad, cross cultural figure rather than reconstructing any one specific regional tradition, consistent with the wider oracle genre's pattern of adapting a widely recognized folkloric figure into original guidance material rather than a documented practice from a single culture.
