Five Publishers That Kept Esoteric and Contemplative Texts in Print

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Publishing House gathers five publishers that, across a century of independent ownership, kept esoteric, occult and contemplative religious texts in print when larger houses would not.

The Theosophical Publishing House, founded in 1913 at Adyar, gave the Theosophical Society Adyar a dedicated imprint for Blavatsky's own writings and later theosophical scholarship, and keeps Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine in print today. Llewellyn Worldwide began in Portland in 1901 as an astrology focused publisher under Llewellyn George, and after Carl Llewellyn Weschcke's 1961 purchase broadened into Wicca, magic and the wider New Age market. Weiser Books grew out of Samuel Weiser's New York bookstore, becoming a dedicated press in 1957 to reprint occult classics including Eliphas Levi, A. E. Waite and Aleister Crowley at a time when many mainstream publishers avoided the subject.

Shambhala Publications, founded in 1969 in Berkeley by Samuel Bercholz and Michael Fagan and named for the mystical Himalayan kingdom of Tibetan Buddhist tradition, became one of the principal English language publishers of Buddhist teaching, closely tied to Chogyam Trungpa's own lineage. Inner Traditions, founded in New York in 1975 by Ehud Sperling, built its catalog around alternative health, world spirituality and indigenous traditions, absorbing the publisher Bear & Company in 2000.

Each began small and independent, in a bookstore's back room or a single founder's office, and each remains active today, still owned or led along the line that founded it.
