The Letters of Paul, Copied Within Two Centuries of Him

Papyrus 46 is not a single leaf but a working codex, a book bound in the single-quire method: take a stack of papyrus sheets, fold the whole stack in half at once, and the resulting pages nest inside one another from the outside in. That method demands the scribe estimate the entire text's length before copying a word, since the number of sheets has to be fixed in advance, and it produces a book whose innermost pages are narrower than its outermost ones, a visible fingerprint of how it was made. What survives is most of Paul's letters as a single, deliberately assembled Christian book, not a scattered set of separate scrolls, which tells textual historians something about how early some churches were already treating Paul's correspondence as a coherent collection worth copying together.

One detail draws particular attention from specialists: the manuscript places the Letter to the Hebrews directly after Romans, ahead of First Corinthians, integrating it fully into the Pauline sequence rather than setting it apart as anonymous or disputed, as later church tradition sometimes did. Whoever assembled this codex, working within a couple of centuries of Paul's own lifetime, already read Hebrews as belonging with his other letters, a small but concrete data point in a debate about New Testament authorship and canon formation that continued for centuries after this book was copied.
