Two Transmitters of One Reader, Compared

Qalun and Warsh transmit the same man, and they still differ from each other enough that the pair is the standard teaching example of why a reading and a transmission are not the same thing. They part on the length assigned to prolonged vowels, on aspects of the treatment of the hamza, on where inclination is applied, and on the vowelling of a set of individual words. Qalun is generally the lighter of the two, with shorter prolongation in several environments, and Warsh carries more of the features that make North African recitation recognisable. Both are Nafi. Neither is a departure from him. What this shows is where the real granularity of the canon lies.

Ten readings is the number people quote, but the working unit of the discipline is the transmission, of which there are twenty, and a reciter is always reciting a named transmission of a named reading rather than a reading in the abstract. Nobody recites Nafi. They recite Qalun from Nafi or Warsh from Nafi. The same is true throughout: nobody recites Asim, they recite Hafs or Shuba from him. Getting that distinction right is the difference between understanding the structure of the canon and repeating a number. It also explains why a printed Quran always states its transmission on the title page, and why a recording is catalogued by transmission rather than by reader. The information is not decorative. It tells a user which of twenty recitations is in front of them, and a reciter who has trained in one cannot follow along in another without noticing at once.
