Organising a Month of Nightly Prayer

Running tarawih and the broader qiyam al-layl through an entire month of Ramadan is a considerable organisational undertaking for a mosque, and the practical shape it takes today varies more than the underlying devotion does. Most congregational tarawih is led by a hafiz, someone who has memorised the Quran in full, reciting a portion of it each night arranged so that the entire text is completed once across the month, a pairing of the night prayer with the practice of hifz that gives Ramadan nights their distinctive character as the one period in the year when an ordinary congregation hears the whole Quran recited aloud from memory rather than in fragments across the year.

The length of the prayer itself is a live point of variation rather than settled uniformity: some mosques hold eight units followed by witr, a shorter form associated with some Salafi-influenced congregations and with the historically earlier practice, while others hold twenty units followed by witr, the longer form more widespread historically across the Hanafi, Shafii and Hanbali schools, and a congregation's choice between the two is often a visible marker of its particular scholarly orientation rather than a matter of mere convenience. The final ten nights receive markedly heavier attendance than the rest of the month in mosques worldwide, since these nights contain the Night of Power, and many mosques extend the prayer considerably on those nights or add additional recitation and supplication, drawing crowds that can rival or exceed the two annual Eid prayers, a scale of nightly attendance no other part of the ordinary prayer calendar produces outside Ramadan itself.
