Ragas in Devotional and Temple Practice

Many ragas carry traditional associations with a specific time of day, season, or mood, a system called samay theory in Hindustani practice, understood as producing a particularly appropriate or effective devotional and aesthetic experience when a raga is performed at its associated time, so that certain ragas are conventionally sung at dawn, others at dusk, and others reserved for particular seasonal or festival occasions. This time bound framework gives raga performance a devotional and even ritual dimension distinct from its purely musical interest, treating the correct pairing of raga to occasion as part of what makes a performance spiritually as well as artistically fitting.

Ragas structure devotional singing across multiple South Asian religious traditions well beyond formal classical concert performance, most directly in Sikhism, where the Guru Granth Sahib itself is organized by raga headings and kirtan performance follows the scripture's own assigned musical settings, but also in Hindu bhajan and temple singing traditions, in which particular ragas are conventionally associated with particular deities or festival occasions. Dhrupad, the oldest surviving genre of Hindustani classical vocal music, developed within exactly this devotional and temple context before later khyal and other styles moved classical raga performance more decisively toward courtly and, eventually, concert settings, a shift that changed raga music's primary social context without displacing the devotional raga traditions that continue in parallel.
