The tradition's constitutional document is the Principles of Unity, agreed by consensus in 1997, revised at a large gathering in 2012 and again in 2021. It is short, it commits the tradition to immanent divinity, to personal authority in spiritual matters, and to social and ecological justice, and it is the only membership test there is.
Teaching happens principally through Witchcamps (week-long residential intensives run in North America, Britain, Germany and elsewhere), and through classes in a core curriculum. Coordination runs through a representative council on which the local communities sit. There is no head of the tradition, and the absence is not an accident: Reclaiming was founded partly in reaction to what its founders had watched concentrated authority do in other traditions.
The absence has costs, and the tradition is honest about them. Consensus process is slow, it advantages the persistent, and informal hierarchies form where formal ones are forbidden. The dissolution of the founding collective in 1997 and the move to a wider network was itself contentious. Questions of race, and of who the teaching actually reaches, have been argued over for years, and the 2021 revision of the principles came out of that argument.
Reclaiming also sits at an uncomfortable angle to two of its own sources. It teaches technique derived from Feri, whose initiates hold that material oathbound, and it inherited from Dianic Wicca a feminist ritual practice while rejecting that tradition's exclusions outright.
