A Passion Play Named for an Upper Room

Senakulo takes its name from the Spanish word for the Cenacle, the Upper Room where Jesus and his disciples shared the Last Supper, though the performance it names stages the whole of his Passion, death and resurrection rather than that one scene alone. The tradition reaches back to the Philippines' Spanish colonial period, and its documented history is tied closely to the Pasyon, a chanted narrative poem retelling Christ's suffering in Tagalog verse. The earliest written Pasyon to survive, Gaspar Aquino de Belen's Ang Mahal na Pasion ni Jesu Christong Panginoon Natin na Tola, was composed in 1703 and approved and first printed in Manila in 1704, and the staged Senakulo tradition is documented from this same late seventeenth and early eighteenth century window, dramatizing scenes the chanted Pasyon narrates in its own mournful tagulaylay style. The form draws on an older layer still: Filipino communities had chanted epic narrative poetry before Spanish contact, and Christian missionaries adapted that existing art of oral narration to the new Passion story rather than importing performance conventions wholesale.

The tradition carries different names in different regions, a sign of how widely it took root: pasyon y muerte or simply passion play in Rizal, Bulacan, Bataan and Pampanga; centurion or hudyuhan in Laguna; tanggal in the Bicol region; and pamalandong in Leyte, each a local name for substantially the same Holy Week reenactment of Christ's Passion.
