Shravanabelagola sits between two rocky hills in the Hassan district of Karnataka, and it is the smaller of the two, Vindhyagiri, that gives the town its fame. Carved from a single block of granite around 981 CE under the patronage of a Ganga dynasty general named Chavundaraya, the monolithic standing statue of Bahubali rises some seventeen meters, one of the largest free standing statues in the ancient world, and depicts the Jain figure mid meditation, vines climbing his motionless legs and arms to signal how long he has stood without moving.
The site takes its name from that stillness: Shravanabelagola combines a Kannada word for a Jain ascetic with a description of the white pond at the foot of the hill. Digambara Jain tradition venerates Bahubali as a figure who conquered pride and attained enlightenment through renunciation rather than through martial victory, a story recounted at length under this atlas's Bahubali and Bharata myth entry, and the statue's scale, visible for kilometers across the surrounding plain, was conceived to make that renunciation permanently legible to pilgrims and passersby alike.
Two smaller hills near the town, Chandragiri and the temple complex clustered around it, add a dense concentration of Jain basadis (temples) dating from the ninth century onward, making Shravanabelagola a continuously active pilgrimage and monastic center rather than a single monument, and giving it a documented role in South Indian Jain history stretching back well over a thousand years before the statue itself was carved.
