One Prophet's Teaching Shapes a Wider Current Documented Decades Later

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Smohalla's teaching directly shaped a wider current of Plateau prophetic movements in the decades that followed his own ministry near Priest Rapids, Washington, a documented influence extending beyond the Wanapum community he led himself. His combination of renewal through refusal of settler agriculture and observance of drum accompanied ceremony became a recognizable pattern later Plateau prophets carried forward in their own teaching.

Smohalla's teaching was among the influences the ethnographer James Mooney traced when documenting the later and more widely known 1890 Ghost Dance, a documented line of influence connecting an earlier and more regionally contained Plateau movement to a much larger pan tribal movement that followed it by four decades. Mooney's own fieldwork treated Smohalla's Washani teaching as part of the same broader current of prophetic renewal movements rather than as an isolated or unrelated precedent.

That a prophet whose own following remained centered on the Columbia Plateau produced teaching an ethnographer later traced as a documented influence on a movement that spread across a far wider area and a much larger number of Native nations marks Smohalla's legacy as a documented case where a regionally contained religious movement's influence outlasted and outgrew its own original geographic reach.
