Sitting Out a Bad Period

In practice hexagram 12 is one of the most useful figures in the book, precisely because its advice runs against instinct.

A querent who draws it is usually trying harder. The text tells them to stop, not to give up, but to disengage from a structure that is not currently transmitting anything, and to spend the period on their own competence instead. The distinction between withdrawal and defeat is the whole interpretive job here, and the line texts support the first.

The lines are also, unusually, progressive in a hopeful direction. The figure begins with grass pulled up by the roots, an image shared with hexagram 11 and pointing to things coming up in groups, and ends with the standstill ceasing. The top line has it come to an end: first obstruction, then good fortune. A hexagram named Obstruction that terminates in its own dissolution is a considerably more optimistic object than its keywords suggest.

That structure, in which the top line describes the exhaustion of the hexagram's own condition, recurs throughout the book and is one of the more reliable reading principles available. A situation at the sixth line is at its extreme, and extremes in this text tend to turn.

Wilhelm and Legge agree closely here. The later manuscript-based translations differ mainly in tone, reading the line texts as terser omen records rather than as counsel, but they do not disturb the shape of the figure or the direction of its movement. This is one of the hexagrams where a reader can use whichever translation is to hand without much risk.
