The disc passed through several hands on the antiquities market before the museum's director, Harald Meller, arranged a sting operation in Basel, Switzerland, in 2002, posing as a buyer to recover the object together with Swiss and German police. The looters and a dealer involved were later convicted, and their testimony, cross-checked against soil residue still on the disc and a subsequent controlled excavation of the findspot, allowed archaeologists to establish an approximate original context even without a clean excavation record, though the dating and interpretation built on that reconstructed context remain more contested than they would be from an undisturbed dig. The museum's custody of the disc is therefore inseparable from its recovery story: it holds the object because a looted and trafficked item was successfully intercepted, not because it commissioned or conducted the excavation that first brought the disc to light.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnState Museum of Prehistory, Halle, Custodians & Museums Well-attested Source Divinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1SourcesDivinity Atlas Long-Form Articles, First Editiontier 1Comments (0)No comments yet.
