Svarog in Modern Rodnovery, and What Changed

The gap between Svarog's thin medieval attestation and his large presence in contemporary Slavic neopaganism, known as Rodnovery, is worth describing directly, since Rodnovery is a real and growing living religious movement rather than simply a scholarly curiosity. Since its modern revival, beginning in the late Soviet and post-Soviet period across Russia, Ukraine, Poland and other Slavic-speaking countries, Rodnovery communities have generally placed Svarog in a far more central theological position than the single Hypatian Codex gloss supports on its own, frequently presenting him as a supreme creator god, a heavenly smith who forged the world itself, and the head of an elaborated pantheon and ritual calendar, including a symbolic image sometimes called the Svarog Circle or Svarog's Square, used in some communities as a solar or cosmological emblem. These elaborations draw on nineteenth and twentieth century folklore compilations, comparative Indo-European reconstruction, and a considerable amount of new theological composition by modern practitioners and writers, rather than on any additional medieval textual discovery, since the underlying primary evidence for Svarog has not changed. This is not a criticism of Rodnovery as a living faith, contemporary religious movements regularly build elaborated theology and practice around historically thin source material, a pattern common to many revivalist and reconstructionist traditions worldwide, but it does mean that a reader encountering a richly developed modern account of Svarog as world-creator and cosmic smith should understand that this picture represents current Rodnovery belief and practice rather than a fuller ancient record that has simply gone unmentioned elsewhere.
