How a Teaching Enters the Canon Without a Manuscript Chain

Padmasambhava and his consort Yeshe Tsogyal are said to have hidden a body of teachings across Tibet in the eighth century, judging that some material was not yet ready to be taught and would do more good arriving later, when a specific future disciple appeared who could receive it. Tulku Thondup's study of the tradition catalogues the range of what counts as a hiding place: physical objects and texts sealed in rock, pillars, lakes and statues, and teachings placed directly into the mindstream of a disciple to surface centuries later as a memory rather than a discovery. The most widely known example outside Tibet is probably the cycle of texts known collectively as the Tibetan Book of the Dead, said to have been discovered by the terton Karma Lingpa in the fourteenth century, which reached a Western readership through Walter Evans-Wentz's 1927 translation long before most other terma material was known outside Tibetan communities at all. What makes a text a terma rather than an ordinary manuscript is not its content but its claimed route into the world: it did not come down through a copied chain of transmission from teacher to student, it was concealed once and found once, and the finder's authority to reveal it rests on being recognized as the rebirth of the original recipient.
