Gurdjieff, the Symbol, and the Sufi Claim

The nine-pointed figure itself is older than the personality system and comes from a different world. G. I. Gurdjieff taught the enneagram symbol to his students from around 1916, presenting it as a diagram of process, the law of three and the law of seven, and used it to describe how any transformation unfolds; he did not attach personality types to it, and none of his published students does either. Gurdjieff said he had received his teaching from esoteric sources in central Asia and the Middle East, and this became, in later popular Enneagram literature, a claim of Sufi origin. No such Sufi source has been produced, no Sufi order is known to have used the figure in this way, and later authors including Riso and Hudson have acknowledged that the personality typology is modern. The symbol and the typology were joined by Ichazo and Naranjo in the twentieth century.

Gurdjieff's own account of encountering teachers in central Asia appears chiefly in Meetings with Remarkable Men, part of his unfinished All and Everything trilogy, published posthumously in 1963 after his death in 1949 and adapted into a 1979 film directed by Peter Brook, shot on location in Afghanistan. James Moore, whose 1991 biography Gurdjieff: The Anatomy of a Myth remains a standard reference, reads the book as a teaching narrative shaped for its didactic effect rather than as a reliable travelogue, a judgment that further weakens any claim that a documented Sarmoung Brotherhood lies behind the enneagram figure.
