Two Schools Born of the Same Split
The Arcane School and the Anthroposophical Society, already catalogued in this atlas, share a structural origin that is easy to miss because the two schools of thought that resulted look so different on the surface. Both were founded by figures who had held serious standing within the Theosophical Society's own structures, Rudolf Steiner as general secretary of its German Section, Alice Bailey as a member of its Esoteric Section, before each broke away over a dispute with the Society's central leadership under Annie Besant. Steiner's break came a decade earlier and centred on Besant's promotion of Jiddu Krishnamurti as a coming World Teacher, a claim Steiner rejected outright. Bailey's break centred instead on whether the Esoteric Section would accept the material she said she received by telepathic dictation from a discarnate teacher. Different disputes, same underlying shape: a senior figure decides the parent organisation's leadership has gone wrong on a specific point of doctrine or authority, and rather than staying to argue it out indefinitely, leaves to found an independent school built on the same broad esoteric foundation.
Both resulting schools kept the correspondence-course and structured-study model Theosophy itself had popularised, even as each rejected the parent organisation's specific leadership and, in Bailey's case, its gatekeeping over what counted as legitimate teaching. Both also outlived their founders as functioning institutions: the Anthroposophical Society continuing after Steiner's 1925 death, the Arcane School and its parent Lucis Trust continuing after Bailey's, evidence the split produced durable institutions rather than followings bound to one founder.
