The core premise behind the stone, that a chemical process could transmute one element into another, for instance turning lead into gold, is understood by modern physics to be false as a matter of ordinary chemistry: the identity of an element is fixed by its number of protons, alterable only by nuclear processes entirely outside the reach of any historical alchemical apparatus, and modern nuclear transmutation of lead into gold, while technically possible in a particle accelerator, produces only vanishingly small quantities at enormous cost, nothing resembling the alchemical promise.
Historians of alchemy including Lawrence Principe caution strongly against treating the search for the philosophers' stone as simply a failed or primitive chemistry experiment; it operated within its own coherent theoretical framework, prime matter, the tria prima, and a graded hierarchy of metallic perfection, that made the stone's pursuit a rational and serious undertaking by the standards of its own time, even though no physical stone matching its description has ever been recovered or reliably produced.
