The Troupe the Zamorin Would Not Lend

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Krishnattam's place in Kerala's performance history is defined as much by what it refused to give away as by what it created. When the ruler of Kottarakkara requested a troupe trained in Krishnattam from the Zamorin of Calicut, the request was denied, a refusal that, by the tradition's own account, prompted Kottarakkara to commission Ramanattam, its own rival Ramayana cycle, in direct response. Ramanattam went on to absorb techniques from Sanskrit theatre and from Krishnattam itself as it developed into kathakali, the classical dance drama that would eventually eclipse Krishnattam's wider fame across Kerala and, later, internationally.

Krishnattam itself took a different path entirely, one shaped by that same guardedness. Rather than spreading outward as a royal art performed across multiple courts, which it had been from the sixteenth century until the 1950s under the patronage of the Samoothiri, the Zamorin's own family, it narrowed instead to a single institution, the Guruvayur Devaswom temple board, which today maintains the only training centre for the art form anywhere. Performance historians generally read Krishnattam as a direct forerunner of kathakali in gesture, costume and dramatic structure, which makes it, in effect, the parent tradition of a far more famous descendant: the troupe once too valuable to lend gave rise to an art that never needed lending at all, because it grew popular enough to travel on its own.
