A Hungarian Scholar Walks to Tibet and Builds the First Dictionary

Tibetology studies Tibetan Buddhist canonical and commentarial literature philologically, reading classical Tibetan directly rather than relying on Mongol, Chinese or later European secondhand summary of Tibetan Buddhism. The Hungarian scholar Alexander Csoma de Koros, who had traveled overland toward Central Asia searching for the origins of the Hungarian people and ended up studying in Ladakhi monasteries instead, published the field's founding tools in 1834, a Tibetan English grammar and dictionary compiled directly from monastic sources, giving European scholarship its first reliable access to the Tibetan Buddhist canon in its own language.

Tibetan Buddhism's doctrinal and ritual literature is vast and was, before Csoma's dictionary, accessible to outside scholarship mainly through later Mongol or Chinese intermediary texts that had already reshaped it in transmission. Tibetology gives the atlas direct philological access to the Tibetan canon itself, letting a claim about Tibetan Buddhist doctrine or practice be checked against the primary Tibetan language sources rather than against a text that has already passed through another tradition's translation and interpretation, each step of which risks losing or reshaping a term with no exact equivalent outside Tibetan.
