A Transmission Received Without a Human Chain
Ahmad al-Tijani taught that he received the litany that defines his order not through the ordinary channel of a living teacher initiating him into an existing chain, but directly from the Prophet Muhammad, who appeared to him, by his own account, in a waking vision rather than a dream, at the oasis of Abu Samghun in what is now Algeria around 1782. Because the transmission came directly from the Prophet rather than through any intermediate master, al Tijani held that his authority needed no silsila at all in the ordinary sense, a claim that placed the Tijaniyya outside the logic every other Sufi order operated within, where legitimacy depended precisely on an unbroken, traceable chain of named masters reaching back to the Prophet. Scholarship on the order describes this waking vision claim, rather than any inherited lineage, as the entire ground of Tijani religious authority, both for al Tijani's own followers, who accepted it as sufficient warrant for the order's distinctive practice, and for the order's early critics, who challenged precisely the claim that a chain could be dispensed with. The specific content al Tijani reported receiving in that encounter is not reproduced in this entry; what the order's own tradition holds was personally conveyed to its founder is treated here as his followers themselves treat it, as a transmission belonging to the order rather than as text for general circulation.
