Two Books That Never Left the Mountain

For most of their existence, the two illuminated gospel books kept at Abba Garima Monastery in the Ethiopian highlands were known mainly through local legend. Monks told visitors that a monk named Garima had written them in a single day, arriving in Ethiopia on a Monday morning and finishing his copy of the four Gospels before the sun set the same evening, a feat credited to divine assistance rather than ordinary penmanship.

Western scholarship, for a long time, treated that story the way it treats most miraculous origin tales: as devotional color layered over a manuscript that was probably medieval. Stylistic comparison suggested the illuminations looked archaic, but style alone could not settle a date, and the books themselves were never allowed to leave the monastery for the kind of laboratory testing that might.

That changed only when radiocarbon analysis could finally be done on site adjacent samples rather than requiring the manuscripts to travel. Oxford University's Research Laboratory for Archaeology, working from samples gathered during conservation work in 2013, returned calibrated ranges of 390 to 570 CE for one volume and 530 to 660 CE for the other. Those numbers did not just settle an argument about age. They placed the manuscripts within the same centuries local tradition had always assigned to their creation, turning a story Western art history had quietly set aside into a claim the evidence now supports.
