Uisang set out in 661 with his close friend Wonhyo to travel from Silla to Tang China in search of further Buddhist study, a documented joint departure distinct from a solitary undertaking planned by Uisang alone. Wonhyo did not complete that journey, and Uisang travelled on and reached China by himself, a documented divergence in outcome between two friends who had begun the same trip together for the same stated purpose.
Once in China, Uisang studied under Huayan, or Hwaeom, masters, a documented course of training that gave him the specific doctrinal grounding, centered on the mutual interpenetration of all phenomena, he would carry back to Korea. Wonhyo, by contrast, went on to develop a more eclectic and popularizing approach to Buddhism within Silla itself rather than completing the same course of foreign study, a documented difference in path the record credits with shaping how differently each man's later teaching would take shape once both were established as consequential monks of early Silla Buddhism.
That two friends who set out together for Tang China in 661 ended the journey on such different terms, one turning back and one completing years of study under Huayan masters abroad, marks Uisang's solo arrival in China as a documented case where a shared beginning produced two separate, equally consequential paths within the same generation of Silla Buddhism.
