Ur and Its Elder Futhark Cognate, Uruz

Ur is the second of the twenty four Futhorc runes descended directly from the Elder Futhark, its name and meaning carried over intact from Uruz, the second rune of the older twenty four rune row, both traditions naming the same wild ox and preserving an almost identical sound value across the split between the continental and Scandinavian futhark on one side and the Anglo-Frisian futhorc on the other. This close continuity across two runic traditions separated by centuries and by a channel crossing is one of the clearer pieces of evidence runologists point to for a shared common ancestor underlying both the Elder Futhark and the futhorc, since a rune this early in the row keeping both its name and its core meaning intact suggests the split between the traditions came after the row's basic vocabulary of names and meanings was already well established.

R. I. Page's account of the futhorc's development places Ur among the runes whose Anglo-Saxon reading changed least from its continental ancestor, in contrast to runes further along the row whose meanings drifted considerably or whose original sense had already grown obscure by the time the surviving rune poem was composed. Both traditions also keep the rune in the same second position, Ur following Feoh just as Uruz follows Fehu, a stability of order that matches the stability of meaning between the two forms.
