From Circulating Verse to Sunyasampadane

Individual vachanas circulated for generations before later compilers gathered them into ordered anthologies, the most significant being the Sunyasampadane, assembled across several centuries beginning around the fourteenth or fifteenth century, which interweaves vachanas from multiple poets into a structured dialogue tracing the shatsthala path from ordinary devotion to final union with Shiva, effectively reading the scattered personal testimony of generations of sharanas as evidence for a single shared spiritual ascent.

A. K. Ramanujan's widely read English translation, Speaking of Siva, introduced the vachanas of Basava, Allama Prabhu, Akka Mahadevi and Dasimayya to a broad readership outside Kannada-speaking Karnataka and remains a standard point of reference in comparative studies of the genre. Because the vachanas are the direct literary record of the movement's founding generation, composed in the vernacular rather than in Sanskrit and attributed to named individual poets rather than to anonymous revelation, modern historical scholarship on Lingayat origins treats them as the primary evidence for reconstructing what Basava and his contemporaries actually taught, distinct from and often used to test later systematic theological accounts such as shatsthala's fully elaborated form.
