The Trust That Runs the World's Richest Temple

Venkateshwara's temple at Tirumala is administered today by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, commonly known as TTD, a statutory trust established under Andhra Pradesh state legislation that oversees not only the temple's daily worship and enormous pilgrim logistics but a wide range of associated institutions funded by the temple's income, including universities, schools, hospitals, publishing houses and Sanskrit and Vedic research institutions, making the trust one of the largest religious charitable organizations in the world by both revenue and the scope of its public activities.

Two specific operations illustrate the institutional scale involved: the temple's laddu prasadam, a sweet offering distributed to pilgrims, is produced in dedicated kitchens at an industrial scale of hundreds of thousands of pieces daily, and the trust has obtained a Geographical Indication registration protecting the term Tirupati Laddu from imitation products made elsewhere; and the hair donated by pilgrims in fulfilment of vows is collected, sorted and auctioned to international wig and hair-extension buyers, reportedly making the temple one of the largest single sources of human hair in the global trade. These operations sit alongside the trust's core religious functions without being treated by devotees as compromising the temple's sanctity, reflecting a long-standing pattern in South Asian temple administration, in which devotional wealth is channelled through organized structures into both continued worship and substantial public welfare and educational activity.
