A Bridge Between Two Styles of Teaching
Scholars studying the historical development of Buddhist thought find the Vibhanga particularly useful precisely because of its threefold method, since setting the sutta-style presentation directly beside the more abstract abhidhamma restatement of the same topic makes visible, in a single text, the actual process by which the earlier discourse material was reworked into the fully systematic categorizing method that defines the Abhidhamma as a distinct genre, evidence many historians read as showing the Abhidhamma method emerging gradually out of close, ongoing study of the suttas themselves rather than arising as an entirely separate, unrelated project.
The catechism sections in particular have drawn comparison to similarly structured question and answer teaching literature found in other ancient philosophical and religious traditions, and are generally understood by scholars as reflecting genuine classroom or debate practice within early Buddhist monastic education rather than being a purely literary device. Because the Vibhanga restates so much core Buddhist doctrine already familiar from the Sutta Pitaka in a more condensed, systematized form, it has often served historically, and continues to serve within traditional Theravada monastic education today, as an accessible entry point into the wider, more demanding technical apparatus of the Abhidhamma Pitaka as a whole, bridging the gap between the discourse literature most students encounter first and the fully abstract analysis of books such as the Dhatukatha and Patthana that follow it.
