A council or synod entry records a formal, convened gathering of religious authorities called to settle a specific doctrinal, disciplinary or organizational question, producing a decision its participants understood as binding on the body that called it. Norman Tanner's edited collection of the decrees of the ecumenical councils gathers the actual texts these gatherings produced, from doctrinal definitions to disciplinary canons, showing that a council's output was rarely a single tidy statement but a working record of what was actually debated and decided.
An entry records who convened a council and under what authority, who attended and who was excluded or absent, and what the council actually decided, distinct from how later tradition came to remember or summarize that decision, since a council's own decrees and a tradition's later, simplified account of them are frequently two different documents worth recording separately.
Many councils recorded here produced decisions that were later disputed, rejected by part of the body that was meant to be bound by them, or reversed by a later council, and an entry records that later contest as part of the council's own history rather than treating its decision as the final word on the question it addressed.
