A metaphysical position entry records a distinct, named answer to a fundamental question about the nature of reality, such as monism, dualism, idealism or materialism, a position argued for by philosophers and often taken up or adapted by a religious tradition to describe what it holds the universe, the self or the divine actually to be made of. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Religion surveys these positions as live, contested arguments rather than as a fixed list of labels, each with its own defenders, its own objections and its own history of revision.
An entry records a position's core claim in plain terms, the specific philosophical problem it was developed to answer, and which religious traditions have adopted, adapted or explicitly rejected it, since the same labeled position, dualism for instance, can mean genuinely different things depending on which philosopher or which tradition is using the word.
Where a position remains actively debated among philosophers of religion today, the entry records that live debate rather than presenting any one metaphysical position as the settled or obviously correct account, since these are precisely the questions the field of philosophy of religion continues to argue rather than questions it has closed.
