An Untraceable Toll and a Faith the State Had Already Criminalized

General accounts commonly repeat a figure of roughly one hundred thousand rebel dead across the eight years of suppression, but that number is not traceable to any rigorous scholarly accounting, and no historian has attempted a war-wide total that also reconciles the civilian deaths caused by the Qing pacification campaign's scorched earth tactics and the famine those tactics produced in the affected provinces. This atlas records the toll as unresolved rather than repeat the unsourced figure as settled.

The rebellion's organizing structure and the authority its leaders claimed were both religious. White Lotus teaching held that the Buddha Maitreya was about to return to end an age of suffering, and its network of local congregations, built for peaceful worship and mutual aid in ordinary times, became the recruitment and communication structure the uprising ran on once local grievances turned to open revolt. The Qing state had long treated White Lotus teaching itself as subversive and periodically banned or persecuted its adherents even where they organized no violence, so an existing religious identity, already criminalized by the state, became the vehicle for an uprising whose immediate triggers were fiscal and administrative.
