Wu Qu's Place in the Zi Wei Series

Wu Qu is the fourth of the six stars in the Zi Wei series, its position in any birth chart fixed at a set offset from Zi Wei's own calculated palace, the same lookup principle that places Tian Ji and Tai Yang before it and Tian Tong and Lian Zhen after it in the series' fixed order. As a star whose reading combines military bearing with financial discipline, Wu Qu's presence within a series otherwise built around an imperial, administrative theme, an emperor star leading a strategist and the sun itself, extends that theme naturally into the practical business of funding and defending the state the other stars in the series represent more abstractly.

Ho Peng Yoke's account of the system notes that Chinese fate calculation more generally drew heavily on the vocabulary of imperial bureaucracy for its star names and offices, ministers, treasurers, generals and gatekeepers standing in for psychological and material qualities the tradition wanted to describe, a naming convention Wu Qu illustrates as clearly as any star in the fourteen. The star's association with wealth won through effort rather than inherited gives it a distinct practical use in the tradition's reading of the Wealth Palace specifically, where Wu Qu's presence is read as favouring steady accumulation over sudden windfall.
