Xevioso Crosses the Atlantic: Sobo and the Rada Nation

The existing description, drawn from Herskovits's ethnographic account, already covers Xevioso as the child of Mawu-Lisa who commands thunder and lightning and whose priesthood alone may approach a lightning-struck body. That account describes Xevioso within Dahomey itself. Published academic and genealogical scholarship also documents that this same thunder vodun crossed the Atlantic with the enslaved Fon and Ewe people carried out of the Bight of Benin during the transatlantic slave trade and continues today as a recognized figure in Haitian Vodou. There he is known as Sobo, sometimes Grand Sobo, a soldier lwa of the Rada nation, the branch of the Haitian pantheon whose own name and character are understood by scholars to derive most directly from Dahomean religion among all the nations that make up Vodou practice. Sobo is described in the standard reference literature as inseparable from his brother Bade, who governs the winds, the two together answering to thunder and wind as a working pair the way Xevioso's own rains follow his lightning in the Dahomean account. Colonial-era suppression of open African worship pushed enslaved practitioners to represent Sobo and Bade under the Catholic image of Saints Cosmas and Damian, a documented survival strategy rather than a theological claim of identity between the figures. The genealogical line from Xevioso to Sobo is traceable in the academic record across four centuries and an ocean.
