Zelio Fernandino de Moraes was born in 1891 in Sao Goncalo, in Rio de Janeiro state, and as a young man in 1908 was attending a Kardecist spiritist center in Rio de Janeiro when he reported becoming possessed by a spirit identifying itself as Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas, an indigenous Brazilian spirit guide.
That spirit, speaking through him, declared that the spirits of enslaved Africans and indigenous Brazilians, excluded from Kardecist practice at the time, would now be welcomed and given voice. Umbanda's own founding narrative, documented by Diana Brown among others, credits this single 1908 possession as the religion's founding moment.
Moraes went on to found the first Umbanda temple, the Tenda Espirita Nossa Senhora da Piedade, in the Rio de Janeiro suburb of Neves, giving institutional form to what had begun as a single reported possession at a Kardecist gathering. A religion that today counts millions of adherents across Brazil traces its own origin to that one night and that one young man's experience.
The account is Umbanda's own telling of its origin, preserved and passed down within the tradition itself, and it places Moraes at a specific place and a specific year rather than at the head of a gradual movement. Whatever weight a historian gives the possession itself, the temple he founded afterward at Neves was a real institution, and it is the one Umbanda dates its own beginning from.
