A Grid That Generates Ninety One Names

The Great Table is not a picture of anything; it is a grid of letters, subdivided into four smaller squares called Watchtowers, one for each of the classical elements, air, water, earth and fire, arranged around a smaller central square called the Tablet of Union that binds the four together. Dee's system treats the grid as a functional device rather than a passive diagram: a defined method of tracing paths through the letters, reading names off in sequence according to rules laid down in the angelic communications Dee recorded, generates the ninety one Parts of the Earth, the governors already recorded in this atlas, each one assigned both a territory on the mundane earth and a place within the thirty Aethyrs.

That generative relationship is why this atlas links the governors to the table as something they are drawn from rather than something they merely illustrate: their names, letter for letter, come out of the grid's own structure by the method Dee's system specifies, not from an independent naming tradition applied to the table afterward. The table's internal logic, elemental quadrants bound by a fifth unifying square, also carries theological weight within the system: it presents the created elemental world as a single organized structure with its own internal government, ninety one named administrators, rather than as an undifferentiated mass, echoing a broader Renaissance instinct to find hierarchical order underlying apparent multiplicity.

Later practitioners have extended the tracing method in directions Dee's own manuscripts do not fully specify, which is part of why different lineages of Enochian practice can disagree about details while still working from the same underlying grid.

From Dee's Diaries to the Golden Dawn's Ritual Room

The table entered the historical record as Dee's own working notes: in the 1580s, Dee, an Elizabethan mathematician and adviser to Elizabeth I with a serious scholarly interest in angelic communication, worked with Edward Kelley as his scrying medium to receive an extensive body of material Dee believed came from angels speaking through a crystal, recorded in diaries that survive today chiefly in the British Library's Sloane manuscript collection. The Great Table and its associated Enochian language material sat largely unpublished and read only by a narrow circle of scholars and collectors for roughly three centuries after Dee's death.

That changed in the 1890s, when the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, particularly through the work of Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, took Dee's raw material and reworked it into a systematized, color coded ceremonial framework: each Watchtower assigned specific colors and correspondences, the governor derivation method formalized into repeatable instruction, and physical versions of the tables painted for use in the order's own rituals. It is this Golden Dawn version, popularized further through Aleister Crowley's writings and later through Israel Regardie's published account of the order's complete system, that most modern practitioners and most published descriptions of the Great Table actually mean when they use the name, rather than Dee's sparser sixteenth century manuscript diagrams. Painted exemplars from that Golden Dawn period survive today in a small number of museum and private collections, though no single object is treated as the one authoritative original.
