Etheric Body

The seven-layer aura is a model of the human subtle body drawn from modern Theosophy and the later New Age literature; the named seven-fold scheme in its familiar form was popularised especially by Barbara Brennan's Hands of Light of 1987, drawing on Theosophical subtle-body doctrine which had itself adapted the Indian koshas and subtle-body teachings. The etheric body is the first and densest layer, said to lie closest to the physical body, a fine web extending an inch or so beyond the skin and read as the template and energetic double of the flesh, associated with physical sensation and vitality.

The Theosophists took the term "etheric" from the old notion of a subtle ether, and the layer corresponds roughly to the vital, breath-related sheath of the Indian koshas. It should be understood as a concept within a modern esoteric system rather than an anatomical fact; there is no scientific evidence for an aura, and the model is offered here as a description of a belief tradition, without any medical or diagnostic claim.

The seven layer model has a traceable history and a recent one. A layered subtle anatomy entered English language occultism through Theosophy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in works such as Leadbeater's Man Visible and Invisible of 1902. The particular seven layer sequence in circulation today, with these names in this order, is later still: it was set out by Barbara Brennan in Hands of Light in 1987, and most contemporary aura charts descend from that book rather than from the Theosophical material behind it.

Etheric Body. The first layer is the one term the modern scheme shares almost unchanged with the Theosophical sources, where an etheric double is the vehicle closest to the physical body. It is the least altered part of the inheritance.

On testing, the record is short and it is worth stating plainly. No instrument has detected a layered field of this kind. Kirlian photography, often produced as evidence, images corona discharge from a high voltage field and responds to moisture and pressure rather than to anything vital. Kilner's 1911 dicyanin screen work was not replicated. The most direct test was published in JAMA in 1998, in which practitioners who said they could feel a human energy field were asked to say which of their hands one was near and were correct about as often as chance would predict. The atlas records this layer as a documented feature of a real modern tradition, and attributes the claim to that tradition rather than making it.
